After a brief hiatus from the rally scene, 2024 Uganda National Rally Champion Yassin Nasser and co-driver Ali Katumba are set to make a return in the highly anticipated CMC Independence Rally, scheduled for October 11th to 13th, 2024. The event, just three weeks away, marks Nasser’s re-entry into competition following his last appearance in the 2024 WRC Safari Rally, where an unfortunate roll of his Ford Fiesta R5 sidelined him.

Last weekend, Nasser was spotted in Zilobwe testing his Ford Fiesta R5, signaling his readiness for the upcoming Gulu event. The CMC-organized rally will serve not only as a competitive platform but also as a crucial preparatory ground for Nasser’s larger ambitions for the 2025 Africa Rally Championship (ARC) season. The break following his WRC Safari mishap allowed time for a new shell for his R5, enabling him to rejoin the national championship.

In Gulu, Nasser will be facing off against fellow R5 driver Jas Mangat. For those keeping score, it’s the rally equivalent of King Kong vs. Godzilla minus the giant lizards and destroyed cities, This face-off promises to deliver the kind of nail-biting, dirt-spraying action rally fans have been craving. The CMC Independence Rally in Gulu will set the stage for the final showdown in Hoima.

But the drama doesn’t stop there. The NRC leaderboard is a high-speed chess game at this point. Dr. Moustapha Mukasa holds a healthy lead with 225 points, probably contemplating adding “professional race car driver” to his medical résumé. Ronald Ssebuguzi is hot on his tail with 203 points, while Jas Mangat sits in third, likely plotting a way to zoom past them both in Gulu.

Meanwhile, in the 2WD class, Ibrahim Lubega is driving like he’s on a mission from the rally gods themselves, with Edward Kirumira and Semambo Julius battling it out for the second and third spots. The CRC class? Oh, that’s Musa Segaabwe’s playground, with Haruna Kataza and Hajji Ahmed Senyonjo chasing his dust

As the CMC Gulu Rally approaches, all eyes are on how this event will influence the season’s outcome, promising to shake up the championship as teams and drivers fight for crucial points in these final moments of the 2024 NRC season.
