Ugandan Drivers Who Captivated Fans but Are Now Missing in Action. Part1

The Ugandan rally scene has seen its fair share of talented drivers, each leaving a unique mark on the sport. Among these icons, some are celebrated not just for their driving skills but also for the passion and vibe they brought to their fans. Yet, a few of these beloved rally stars have mysteriously stepped away from the spotlight, leaving fans to wonder if they’ve been whisked away by aliens or simply swapped their helmets for a quieter life. Let’s take a ride and remember these legends who once tore up the tracks but are now conspicuously absent from the rally madness…
1. Desh Kananura
Desh Kananura wasn’t just a skilled driver; he was a charismatic force who turned every race into an exhilarating spectacle. His fans, donning colorful DRT T-shirts adorned with KFC logos and capes, created an electric atmosphere. In 2015, Kananura wowed the crowd when brought in his Subaru impreza N14 and later another N14 R4 and a Mitsubishi Evo X R4 tightening the competition on the local scene. Though he has taken a step back from racing, whispers of a potential comeback have fans buzzing.

2. Ambrose Byona (Omunyeto)
Known affectionately as Omunyeto, Ambrose Byona was a key player in the thrilling DRT team. His journey began in a striking Mitsubishi Pajero Desert Warrior, quickly making him a beloved underdog in Uganda’s rally landscape. As he transitioned to a Mitsubishi Evo IX, his talent shone through every turn and drift. He once sold an Evo X to fellow driver Umar Dauda for an unbelievable price, but with another Evo X waiting in the wings, fans are eagerly hoping for his return.

3. Godfrey Lubega (Tallman)
Godfrey Lubega, affectionately dubbed “Tallman,” has long been known for his speed. Although he’s currently on a break, his Subaru Impreza N12 awaits its moment in the spotlight, and fans are hopeful for his return to racing soon.

4. Christakis Fitidis
Fitidis became a fan favorite alongside Eric Nzamwita as they conquered the rally scene in the Subaru N12B and later in the Mitsubishi Evo X. Their fierce rivalry with top drivers like Hassan Alwi Jr. and Ronald Sebuguzi kept fans on the edge of their seats. After winning the National Rally Championship in 2017, Fitidis left a lasting legacy that many hope to see rekindled.
5. Rajiv Ruperelia
Rajiv Ruperelia made a memorable debut with a borrowed Subaru N10, showcasing his determination and talent. He later acquired Uganda’s first VW Proto and made a mark in the CRC class, often leading events. His VW Proto now sits patiently, waiting for the day he decides to rev up the engines once more.

6. Hajji Musa Mulika
Hajji Musa Mulika electrified fans with his fierce racing in a Subaru Impreza GC8, battling against formidable Evo Xs and stronger subarus and on several occasions he finished in the top 10. Recently he has been spotted working on his beloved Subaru GC8, fans are optimistic that he’s not just fixing the radio but tuning it for a triumphant return.

7. Adam Essa Rauf
After acquiring a Mitsubishi Evo IX and later upgrading to an Evo X, Adam Rauf was on fire in the rally scene he did rounds both in Uganda and Tanzania and made a name for himself. However, life led him to step back from racing, leaving his Evo X at home, likely reminiscing about thrilling adventures. Will he return? Only time will tell!

8. Edson Mungyereza
As the owner of Edmu Rally Academy, Edson Mungyereza was a formidable competitor in a Subaru Impreza GC8. Known for his head-to-head racing during superspecial stages, he later upgraded to an Impreza N10 and now serves as the chief mechanic for Moil Rally Team. With both of his rally cars still in his possession, a comeback may be on the horizon.

9. Dr. Ahmed Ashraf
Dr. Ahmed Ashraf was not only a champion but also the proud owner of one of the loudest Subaru Impreza GC8s ever. After winning the National Rally Championship in 2008 and later upgrading to an N8 and N14, he now shares his passion for speed with his sons. Like a doctor on sabbatical, he remains hopeful for a return to the track.

10. Fred Wampamba
Starting his career in a Toyota Celica before mastering the Subaru Impreza, Fred Wampamba’s talent has always shone through till he bought a Subaru impreza N14 and decided to park it. Now, his car sits idle in Mengo, looking like a king awaiting its knight’s return. Fans are ready, flags waving, for the day Tiger Rally Team decides to race again.

These rally icons have not only showcased incredible skill on the track but have also forged deep connections with fans who continue to support them. As many of these drivers hold onto their rally cars, expressing hopes for a comeback, the Ugandan rally community eagerly awaits the return of these cherished figures.
