CMC to Honor Late Daudi Ochaya as Gulu Independence Rally Preparations Take Shape

As preparations for the Gulu Independence Rally gain momentum, the Central Motor Club (CMC) has announced a heartfelt tribute to the late Daudi Ochaya, a prominent figure in the local motorsport community. Ochaya, who served as the chief of security for the Desh Rally Team, passed away on Saturday 14th september 2024 morning at his home in Kyebando. He will be laid to rest this Saturday 21st september 2024 at Layibi, his ancestral burial grounds in Gulu.

In a fitting homage, CMC has decided to name two stages of the rally in honor of Ochaya, recognizing his invaluable contributions to the sport and the community. The first stage, measuring 26.87 kilometers, along with the fourth stage, will bear his name. According to the rally’s organizing committee (COC), Ochaya played a crucial role in ensuring that the people of Gulu had the opportunity to experience the thrill of rally racing, making him a beloved figure among local fans.

The motorsport fraternity, alongside the Central Motor Club and the Desh Rally Team, is coming together to mourn Ochaya’s passing while celebrating his legacy. His commitment to promoting rallying in Gulu has left a lasting impact on the community, and his absence will be felt deeply.

In addition to Ochaya, CMC will honor other notable figures in the rally community. Stages will also be named after the late James Opoka, who served as navigator to Emma Katto .Opoka was instrumental in enhancing the rally experience for local spectators during the last rally in Gulu in 2009 which was organized by MOSAC and his contributions will be remembered fondly.

Another individual set to be recognized is Charles Willy Ochola, a former deputy vice president and navigator for legendary drivers Jimmy Dean and Paddy Blick. Currently residing in Gulu, Ochola’s achievements in the sport continue to inspire many.

As the Gulu Independence Rally draws near, CMC is committed to ensuring that the event honors not just the thrill of motorsport, but also the profound connections and cherished memories that bind the community together. In memory of Daudi Ochaya, the rally will not only be a celebration of speed and skill but a heartfelt tribute to a man whose legacy will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him
