The motorsport season is set to close in style as Mbarara Motor Club (MMC) hosts the fifth and final round of the 2024 Autocross Championship. Scheduled for December 14th at Mwesigwa Resort, this year’s event promises an exciting climax with a revamped 5.8km stage that is both technical and challenging.
Unlike last year’s 6.2km stage, the 2024 route has been shortened slightly and redesigned to avoid sections near the main road, ensuring enhanced safety and a tighter racing experience. The stage features smooth roads with loose gravel, providing an ideal setting for drivers to showcase their skills in precision and speed.
According to the Clerk of the Course, Mr. Shafiq Matovu, “This year’s event is designed to push drivers’ limits with a technical course that balances speed and control. We’ve made adjustments to ensure safety while maintaining the excitement our fans and competitors expect.”
The current standings have Musa Ssegaabwe leading the pack with 65 points, followed by Andy Musoke at 49 points. Kevin Bebeto is in third with 43 points, closely trailed by Denis Bahizi at 41 points and Walter Kibande at 40 points. The title is still up for grabs, making the event a must-watch for motorsport fans.
The defending champions, Ronald Sebuguzi and Anthony Mugambwa, who clinched last year’s event in a Ford Fiesta Proto, are yet to confirm their participation. However, the competition is heating up as over 15 entries have already been submitted at the FMU offices in Lugogo.
Notable among the confirmed participants is 2010 National Champion Nasser Mutebi, who will pilot his Mitsubishi Evo 9. Fresh off his Division 1 Championship victory, Dr. Moustapha Mukasa has also thrown his hat into the ring, promising a thrilling contest. Other standout entries include Andy Musoke in a Mitsubishi Evo 6, Topher Katera in a Subaru Impreza GC8, Division 2 champion Didas Matsiko in a Subaru Impreza, and Unnisan Bakunda in his Mitsubishi Evo 9.
The event is sponsored by Minister Rukaari for the second consecutive year, demonstrating his continued commitment to motorsport development in Uganda.
Entries remain open for those looking to compete, with registration ongoing at the FMU offices. Let the engines roar as we head into the ultimate autocross spectacle of 2024!
