Historic FIA General Assemblies and Awards Gala Held in Kigali

For the first time in motorsport history, the FIA Annual Conference and Awards Gala was held on the African continent. The groundbreaking 2024 edition took place in Kigali, Rwanda, from 9th to 13th December at the iconic Kigali Auditorium, marking a significant milestone in the sport’s global outreach.

The event was packed with vibrant activities that celebrated motorsport and its values. The week began with an array of seminars and training sessions, focusing on key aspects of motorsport. These sessions, conducted by esteemed experts, offered valuable insights to participants from diverse backgrounds.

On Wednesday, 11th December, the FIA University held a graduation ceremony for individuals who had completed various certifications and diplomas. The event featured graduates from around the world, both in person and online. Uganda was proudly represented, with Kees Kagolo and Monica Birwinyo among the honorees. Kagolo addressed the graduates, sharing insights about the Ugandan rally scene, while Birwinyo recounted her transformative experience with FIA University courses.

One of the most anticipated moments of the week was the launch of a cross car, a budget-friendly race car constructed by Kigali Technical School in accordance with FIA technical specifications. The unveiling, attended by prominent racers from Formula 1 and the World Rally Championship (WRC), served as the opening ceremony for the awards gala, showcasing Africa’s growing capacity in motorsport innovation.

The FIA also advanced its commitment to environmental sustainability by organizing the Smart Driving Challenge. This initiative promotes eco-friendly and safe driving practices under the “Go Green Smart Driving” campaign, aiming to reduce emissions and protect the environment. The inaugural Kigali edition saw 43 participants, with Uganda’s Jackson Serwanga emerging as the winner an incredible achievement that brought pride to the nation.

Throughout the week, representatives from FIA-affiliated countries convened for meetings led by ASNs (National Sporting Authorities) and ACNs (National Automobile Clubs). Discussions focused on mobility, technical advancements, and the future of motorsport. Uganda’s delegation, led by Hon. James Akena, actively contributed to the deliberations.

The week culminated in the prestigious FIA Awards Gala and Dinner, an elegant evening dedicated to honoring exceptional achievements in motorsport. Competitors from various disciplines were celebrated, with Michèle Mouton receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award. Mouton, the only woman to win a WRC event, was also recognized for her outstanding work as the former head of the FIA Safety Commission.

In a historic first, a sitting head of state graced the FIA Awards Gala. Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame attended the event and used the occasion to announce Rwanda’s bid to host a Formula 1 event in Kigali a bold move that could revolutionize African motorsport.

Speaking at the event, Kees Kagolo, President of the Eastern Motor Club (EMC), expressed his gratitude to FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem for inviting the graduates to the gala. Kagolo congratulated all graduates on their accomplishments and reflected on the transformative impact of the week-long event on motorsport in Africa.

The 2024 FIA General Assemblies and Awards Gala was more than a celebration of excellenceit was a testament to Africa’s growing prominence on the global motorsport stage. Rwanda’s exceptional hosting has set a high standard and paved the way for future collaborations that will continue to elevate the sport.
