Kenya Motorsport Federation Cancels Final Round of African Rally Championship 2024
By Mwambazi Lawrence
The Kenya Motorsport Federation (KMSF) has announced the cancellation of what would have been the final round of the 2024 African Rally Championship (ARC). The decision, officially declared by the Sikh Union Club the nominated organizer of the event was attributed to severe weather conditions that rendered the rally routes impassable. The event was to run alongside the prestigious Guru Nanak Rally but has now been declared a case of force majeure.
This marks the second cancellation in the 2024 ARC calendar, following the earlier withdrawal of the Ivory Coast round, which was initially slated to open the championship. The cancellations highlight the growing challenges faced by the African Rally Championship, including adverse weather conditions and a lack of sponsorship in several regions.
Despite the setbacks, four ARC rounds were successfully organized this year:
- Pearl of Africa Rally (Uganda)
- Zambia International Rally
- Burundi International Rally
- Rwanda Mountain Gorilla Rally
All four rounds were dominated by Kenyan crew Karan Patel and Tauseef Khan in their Skoda Fabia R5. Their impeccable performance across the season has solidified their reputation as one of Africa’s most formidable rally teams.
The ARC, once a vibrant series featuring multiple nations, appears to be facing significant challenges. Countries like Tanzania and Ivory Coast, which were traditionally strongholds of the championship, have struggled to secure sponsorships, resulting in canceled events. The Ivory Coast round, often the season opener, has seen dwindling participation over the years due to logistical and financial constraints.
The FIA and organizers are optimistic about revitalizing the ARC in 2025. The proposed calendar includes:
- Round 1: March 20–23, 2025 – Equator Rally Kenya
- Round 2: May 9–11, 2025 – Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally
- Round 3: June 15–17, 2025 – Rallye International du Burundi
- Round 4: Rwanda Mountain Gorilla Rally
- Round 5: Rally of Tanzania
While the ARC faces hurdles, its stakeholders remain committed to overcoming these challenges. Rally fans and participants alike are hopeful that the 2025 season will bring renewed energy, better sponsorship deals, and consistent weather conditions to keep the championship alive and competitive.
For now, rally enthusiasts turn their attention to the next season, eagerly anticipating a fresh start for African motorsport.
