In this continuation of our spotlight on these exceptional talents, we look at more drivers who made a significant impact and whose comebacks are eagerly anticipated.
Byron Rugomoka
Byron Rugomoka made headlines not long ago after his impressive transition from a Mitsubishi Evo7 to the high-performing EvoX, previously owned by the renowned Ronald Ssebuguzi. His skillful maneuvers led him to become the 2022 national champion alongside co-driver Hakim Mawanda, following a fierce rivalry with Ponsiano Lwakataka. Although Byron has taken a break from rallying, his Mitsubishi EvoX sits ready in his backyard, fueling hopes that he will return to the tracks soon.
Duncan Mubiru aka Kikankane
Duncan Mubiru is more than a name; he’s a phenomenon in East African rallying. Over a decade, he has piloted a dizzying array of powerful machines, from his early Mitsubishi Evo5 to the groundbreaking Subaru Impreza GVB, which secured him the 2021 Uganda National Rally Champion title. Currently, his Ford Fiesta Proto is being rebuilt in Latvia, but whispers of his return have fans revving with excitement. Will the man known as “Kikankane” reclaim his throne?
Mark Lubega
The son of the legendary Charlie Lubega, Mark has captivated fans with his daring driving style. His aggressive approach led him to outgrow his Subaru N10, prompting a necessary break to reassess and secure a more fitting car. With his potential recognized by many, supporters are excited to see how he bounces back and what new machine he may bring to the rally scene.
Moses Lumala
In 2016, Moses Lumala made waves by importing two rally cars, including the Mitsubishi EvoX and Evo9R4. He participated in several events, generating anticipation among fans for his future performances. Rumors suggest he has acquired a Ford Fiesta Proto from Latvia, with plans to make a significant comeback alongside fellow driver Duncan Mubiru. Fans are eagerly awaiting his return, hoping he’ll bring back some fresh moves and perhaps a few stories from his time off the track!
Omar Mayanja aka Mr. Clean Lines
The soft spoken Omar Mayanja known for his meticulous driving style, has left a lasting impression on Ugandan rallying since his debut in 2003. Despite taking a break from full rally participation due to work commitments, he has been spotted testing his Mitsubishi EvoX, hinting at a possible return to the sport that has defined his career.
Susan Muwonge aka Super Lady
A trailblazer in motorsport, Susan Muwonge is the first female Uganda National Rally Champion, securing her titles in 2011 and 2018. While her busy schedule at St. Francis Buddo School has sidelined her from full participation, her practice sessions at the Garuga Race Track suggest that she will soon be back in the competitive arena, ready to reclaim her crown in her trusty Subaru N12B known to many as” kachungwa.”
Arthur Blick Jr.
The 2019 Uganda National Rally Champion, Arthur Blick Jr. has been missed since a serious bike accident last year forced him into a sabbatical. Known for his speed and exceptional teamwork with various co-drivers, Arthur’s decision to sell his Mitsubishi EvoX and join the administration has left his fans wondering and waiting to see what the future holds for their beloved driver.
Kepher Walubi
Kepher Walubi made a name for himself after upgrading from a Toyota Runx to a Mitsubishi EvoX, showcasing impressive performances at home rallies. After selling his EvoX, he assured fans that a superior car is on the horizon. The anticipation for his next move continues to build, we can’t wait to see what he’ll bring next.
Samuel Bwette aka Kawunyemu
Samuek Bwette captured fans’ hearts with his fearless driving style after upgrading to a Mitsubishi Evo9 in 2016. Although setbacks plagued his journey, his fan base remained steadfast. Last year, he sold his rally car, promising better days ahead, and fans are eager to see what he has in store.
Yusuf Bukenya
As the son of legendary driver Wycliff Bukenya, Yusuf made waves in the rallying community with his Mitsubishi Evo9. unfortunatelly a devastating fire during the 2018 UMC Fort Portal Rally left his Evo9 burnt to ashes.Several efforts were made to getYusuf back on track that included fundraising sprint for a new car. Though he was able to acquire an Evo4, it has not proven to be reliable
21. Innocent Bwamiki
Innocent Bwamiki last graced the tracks at the Zambia International Rally, competing with Hamza Lwanga in their Mitsubishi Evo9. Although a tough outing led him to take a break, his well-maintained Evo9, affectionately known as “Panther,” leaves the door open for a return. Fans are hopeful for his comeback as he remains a formidable presence in Ugandan rallying.
