All Eyes on Oscar Ntambi as Uganda Heads to the 2026 Safari Rally

As the global rallying fraternity gears up for the 2026 WRC Safari Rally, scheduled for March 12–15, Uganda will once again be represented on one of motorsport’s toughest and most prestigious stages. The iconic Safari Rally will serve as the third round of the 2026 World Rally Championship and also double as the opening round of the Africa Rally Championship.

Uganda’s recent history at the Safari Rally reflects resilience and growing ambition on the continental and global stage. At the 2025 edition held from March 20–23 in Kenya, two Ugandan crews lined up among a competitive field of 39 crews, featuring Rally1 stars and seasoned regional contenders. Yasin Nasser and co-driver Ali Katumba competed in a Ford Fiesta Rally2, while Timothy Gawaya, navigated by Francis Wamala, made his Safari debut in a Seat Ibiza.

Despite facing several challenges along the way, Nasser and Katumba successfully completed the 2025 Safari Rally, a significant milestone in their Safari Rally journey. The finish was particularly important following earlier setbacks in previous editions, including mechanical troubles and a heavy roll in 2024. Their 2025 result underlined their determination and ability to conquer one of the most punishing rallies on the WRC calendar.
Meanwhile, Gawaya’s debut injected youthful enthusiasm into Uganda’s presence, as he gained invaluable experience at the biggest stage.
Speculation has surrounded whether Nasser and Katumba will return to defend their Africa Rally Championship title, but as of now, their participation in the 2026 Safari Rally has not been officially confirmed.
That uncertainty has paved the way for a new Ugandan chapter at the Safari Rally. Oscar Ntambi has been confirmed as Uganda’s sole representative for the 2026 event, reuniting with experienced co-driver Asuman Mohammed. The reunion brings back a familiar partnership as the crew sets its sights on one of rallying’s ultimate tests. The pair recently acquired a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X from Adam Rauf, a competitive and FIA-eligible machine well suited to the brutal Safari conditions.

Speaking ahead of the team’s preparations, Ntambi highlighted both the pride and responsibility of flying Uganda’s flag on the world stage.
“With the backing of KCB Bank, which has fully committed to supporting our campaign, we are determined to fly the Uganda flag high. This is a dream opportunity, and we are preparing thoroughly physically, technically, and mentally to compete at this level,” Ntambi said.
KCB Bank’s continued support has been instrumental in strengthening regional motorsport, backing several drivers and teams across East Africa, particularly for logistically demanding events such as the Safari Rally.
Renowned for its unforgiving terrain, the Safari Rally challenges crews with fast dusty plains, rocky sections, deep mud, and unpredictable weather. As both a WRC round and ARC opener, the event carries double significance offering world championship points while simultaneously launching the continental title chase.
For Ntambi and Asuman, the 2026 Safari Rally is more than just another start; it is a defining opportunity to establish Uganda as a consistent force in regional and international rallying. With solid preparation, competitive machinery, and strong institutional backing, the crew heads to Naivasha with optimism and purpose.
