36 riders were officially flagged off this morning to represent the country at the FIM Africa Motocross of African Nations (MXOAN), set for this weekend at the Don Brook Motocross Track in Harare, Zimbabwe.

The flag-off ceremony took place at the National Council of Sports (NCS) offices in Lugogo, presided over by Federation of Motorsport Clubs of Uganda (FMU) top officials alongside NCS representatives.

The continental showdown will feature powerhouse nations including hosts Zimbabwe, Kenya, South Africa, Namibia, Madagascar, Tanzania, Angola, among others.

Last year, the championship was staged in Marrakech, Morocco, where South Africa clinched top honors with maximum points, while Uganda finished second. Notable performances then came from Stav Orland, who won the MX2 class (absent this year due to commitments in the USA), Hellena Birungi, who took the MX50 Ladies crown, and Ramathan Mubiru, who made the podium.

This year, Uganda’s hopes rest on a formidable young squad led by team captain Gift Sebuguzi in the MX125 class. Sebuguzi has enjoyed a stellar season and will be a key figure in the country’s medal ambitions.

In the MX85 category, fans will look out for the Air Uganda-sponsored Katende brothers Miguel and Jonathan  both aiming to deliver maximum points. The MX65class will see Larry Sekamwa join forces with the Musedde brothers, while the MX50 category will feature last year’s standout performer pairing with Abigail Katende.

Uganda’s MX65 Ladies team will include Jamaima Makumbi, Faith Deedan, and Norah Akao, while Ali Omar will fly the flag as the country’s sole representative in the MX1 category. The Veterans (Vets) class will feature the experienced Rogers “Blaza SB4” Sebunya alongside JB Achal.

With stiff competition expectedin the MX125, MX85, and MX65 classes  each offeringtwopoint-scoring riders  Uganda will need both skill and consistency to outshine rivals.

While some members of the team have already touched down in Harare, others are set to travel tomorrow and Thursday, all eager to battle for continental glory.

If the team can match last year’s grit and determination  and with fresh young talent ready to prove themselves  Uganda’s podium dreams remain very much alive.
