Ahmed Huwel Upgrades to Toyota GR Yaris Rally2 Ahead of Morogoro Rally
By Mwambazi Lawrence
Big news from the land of speed bumps ,The ex-Stephane Lefebvre Toyota GR Yaris Rally2 landed this week in Tanzania, and local rally hero Ahmed Huwel better known as Chief Mkwawa is ready to trade in his old Protos for a car that doesn’t argue back when he floors the accelerator. The highly competitive machine will make its debut at the Morogoro Rally, scheduled for the weekend of 17th August 2025.

Ahmed Huwel, a familiar face in East African rallying since 2006, first appeared in the Safari Rally driving a Subaru N10 a car that retired so often, some fans thought it had a part-time job as a parking lot decoration. Despite that, he captured attention in 2016 when he finished second at the Maji Poa Guru Nanak Rally, still in the Subaru N10, which had survived more bumps than a Dar-es-Salaam pothole at night.
By 2017, Huwel decided enough was enough and bought a Ford Fiesta Proto. This was the moment he realized that rallying can be fun when your car actually starts the next morning. He even went on to get a Ford Fiesta Proto Mk2, which kept him in podium conversations and reduced the number of times he had to explain to fans why his car was on a tow truck.

Now, the Toyota GR Yaris Rally2 marks a whole new chapter for the Chief. This car is considered a beast in the Rally2 world so much so that one fan said, “If this car doesn’t win, then Ahmed was driving it with the handbrake on.” The GR Yaris promises reliability, speed, and the ability to make international drivers check their mirrors twice.

Huwel’s last appearance at the 2024 Guru Nanak Rally saw him finish fourth overall, which was impressive though he insists he could have done better if a goat hadn’t casually crossed the road mid-stage. With the new car now in his hands, fans are eager to see if he can turn this upgrade into a podium or finally a victory in Morogoro.
Tanzanian motorsport fans are already stocking up on popcorn and camera phones, ready to witness Chief Mkwawa unleash the GR Yaris Rally2. As one rally fan humorously posted online:
“Kama hii gari haitaleta trophy, tunampigia simu Stephane Lefebvre tuombe refund!”
