Uganda’s rally paddock is constantly evolving, with every event introducing fresh talent, powerful machines, and stories of grit and passion. Among the newest additions is J Racing, a dynamic team led by driver Johnson Ssebuggwawo and his co-driver Brian Nkangi. Together, they pilot a Subaru Impreza N8, affectionately named Alonzo, as they embark on their journey to greatness.

For Johnson, rallying is more than a sport it’s a lifelong dream. “I’m the last born of six,” he begins, sharing his roots in Kitovu, Masaka, where he was raised by his parents, the late John Merry Ssebuggwawo and Veronica Ssebuggwawo.

Growing up in Masaka, Johnson was captivated by the sound of rally cars tearing through the dusty suburbs of masaka. “It was impossible not to be inspired. Watching legends like Charlie Lubega, Moses Lumala, the late Charles Muhangi, and others dominate the sport planted a seed in me. I promised myself that one day, I would follow in their footsteps.”

Johnson’s journey officially began in 2022, thanks to the support of fellow rally driver Nagasha Graham, who provided him with a car to launch his career. Preparing the vehicle for competition was no easy feat, but Johnson leaned on the guidance of experienced drivers and mentors, including Andy Musoke, Christakis Fitidis, Ronald Ssebuguzi, Dr. Moustapha Mukasa, Najib Sempijja, Mike Mukula Jr and Patrick  Njakaasi as the technical manager.

“My mentors were instrumental in every step, from repairs to navigating the complexities of the sport,” Johnson reflects. His debut at the Champions Sprint was a pivotal moment, where he clinched victory in the cadet class. “Winning that event gave me the confidence and motivation to pursue this dream seriously.”

Looking ahead, Johnson and Brian have a clear roadmap. They plan to compete in the autocross class in 2025 as part of their development before transitioning to the CRC class by 2026. Their ultimate goal? To become Uganda National Rally Champions.

“We believe in hard work, dedication, and continuous improvement,” Johnson says. “With the right team and preparation, we know this dream is achievable.”

Johnson’s vision extends beyond personal success. He sees Uganda becoming a continental powerhouse in motorsport, with local drivers and teams achieving recognition across Africa and beyond. “I envision a future where Uganda’s rally scene inspires the next generation, just like the legends inspired me,” he adds.

As J Racing prepares for the upcoming season, their determination and passion are evident. With a strong team, a powerful machine, and unwavering focus, they are set to make a significant impact on Uganda’s motorsport scene.

Johnson’s story is one of resilience, ambition, and the power of dreams. The motorsport community eagerly anticipates what J Racing will achieve, proving that with dedication and teamwork, anything is possible.
