Uganda’s rally scene has always been a thrilling spectacle, with legendary drivers and iconic stages creating a legacy cherished by motorsport fans. From heart-pounding jumps to high-speed chases, certain viewing points have become hallowed grounds in the books of rally history. Here’s a look at the most iconic rally viewing points and stages in Uganda, where the roar of engines and cheers of the crowd blend into unforgettable moments.
1. “Mayangayanga “The Epicenter of Spectacle”
The stage, which stretched from Nakifuma to Walusubi had the Mayangayanga viewing point which was the crown jewel of Ugandan rallying in its prime. The stage was synonymous with excitement, featuring a dramatic flat-out jump right before a tight corner at Mayangayanga. Fans flocked to this vantage viewingpoint to witness the sheer skill of drivers like Charlie Lubega, who expertly navigated the corner with precision that won him widespread admiration. The stage is also remembered for Ponsiano Lwakataka’s memorable overtaking of Wyclif Bukenya, a maneuver that cemented his reputation as one of Uganda’s finest rally drivers. Sadly, this iconic stage was last run in 2013, leaving behind a legacy of thrilling memories.
2. Bujagali “The Fast Lane to Glory”
The Bujagali stage, winding through Muguluka, Kayitabawala, and Mutai before culminating at Bujagali, was renowned for its astonishing average speeds. Drivers could push their limits on this stage’s numerous flat-out jumps, with speeds reaching extraordinary heights. Charlie Lubega clocked an impressive 178 km/hr, while Chipper Addams and Moses Lumala were close behind with speeds of 172 km/hr and 170 km/hr, respectively. The sheer velocity and excitement of Bujagali made it a favorite among fans and drivers alike, representing the zenith of high-speed rallying in Uganda.
3. Kitagata “ Precision and Peril”
Starting at Bushenyi Administration and finishing at Kitagata Hot Springs, the Kitagata stage was a true test of driver skill. The stage was infamous for its challenging tight corners and wooden bridges, which added a layer of peril to the race. The tragic accident involving Chipper Addams’ Mitsubishi EV5, known as Nabuto, is a poignant reminder of the dangers faced by drivers. Despite its hazards, Kitagata remains etched in rally history as a stage that demanded precision and bravery.
4. Mpigi Ku Bikondo”The Thrill of the Flying Finish”
Beginning at Nakawuka Road and concluding at Mpigi Ku Bikondo, the stage was always the first on the rally itinerary, setting the tone for the rest of the event. The viewing point at Mpigi Ku Bikondo was where fans witnessed some of the most dramatic moments. One of the most memorable incidents occurred when Chipper Addams overtook Kaka Jr. at the last corner before the flying finish when everyone was watchin, showcasing his remarkable driving abilities. This stage’s length and challenging conditions made it a tough one for drivers, but it was also where legends were made.
5. Father Ngobya “ The Quick Sprint”
The Father Ngobya stage, stretching just 6 kilometers, might have been short, but it was packed with excitement. It gained fame in 2011 when Nasser Mutebi pulled off a strategic win against Duncan Mubiru. By spilling oil on his tire, Nasser created the illusion of an oil leak, forcing Duncan to slow down. This clever move allowed Nasser to secure victory in a stage characterized by its rapid pace and demanding turns through small villages in Masaka to Kitovu.
6. Kyamugolani “ The Stage of Spectacular Jumps”
Starting from Bwizibwera and ending in Kyamugolani, this stage stretched over 84 kilometers and occasionally began at Kyeibega or Biharwe. Kyamugolani’s viewing point became legendary for its spectacular flat-out jumps. The sight of Ponsiano Lwakataka and George Semakula launching their Subaru N8, affectionately nicknamed Magege, into the air remains a cherished memory. Susan Muwonge’s dramatic roll at the flying finish, while leading the rally in her Subaru N10, is another unforgettable moment from Kyamugolani.
7. The S-Bend at Kasiso “ The Corner of Legends”
The stage which started from Kasana and ended in Bamunanika, featured the notorious S-bend, a viewing point that became a fan favorite. The way Charlie Lubega and other drivers like Chipper Adams and Moses Lumala navigated this bend made it a highlight of the rally. Fans would Rush from other stages just to witness the skill and flair displayed at this challenging S bend, cementing its place as a legendary spot in Ugandan rally history.
8. Lubiri Circuit “The Heart of Ugandan Rallying”
No discussion of iconic Ugandan rally points would be complete without mentioning the Lubiri Circuit. Once the epicenter of rallying in Uganda, Lubiri attracted massive crowds and became synonymous with rallying excellence. The electrifying atmosphere was so intense that foreign drivers reported hearing the deafening cheers of fans through their helmets. Despite its unfortunate ban from rallying events, Lubiri remains a symbol of Uganda’s rich rally heritage, and enthusiasts hope for its return to the rallying calendar.
