Toyota’s Rovanperä Dominates Safari Rally Kenya with Commanding Lead
In a thrilling display of precision and resilience, Toyota’s double world champion Kalle Rovanperä emerged as the frontrunner in the Safari Rally Kenya on Saturday, showcasing his prowess amidst a field of formidable rivals who encountered setbacks along the grueling course.
Hailing from Finland, Rovanperä, strategically navigating through the rugged terrain, secured a commanding lead of two minutes and 8.2 seconds as he poised himself for the final showdown on Sunday. Participating in selected events this season, Rovanperä’s calculated approach paid dividends as he maintained a steady course, steering clear of pitfalls to fortify his advantage on the challenging African landscape.
While his Toyota teammates, Elfyn Evans and Takamoto Katsuta, encountered setbacks in the form of punctures, with the latter ultimately clinching the runner-up position, the M-Sport Ford’s Adrien Fourmaux held his ground in third, adding to the intensity of the competition.
However, the Hyundai camp faced adversity as the overall championship leader, Thierry Neuville, grappled with a fuel system malfunction during the afternoon session, plummeting to fifth position and trailing by over 11 minutes. Despite Neuville’s setback, the battle for supremacy intensified, with Evans striving to bridge the gap, albeit hampered by four punctures amid fluctuating conditions ranging from arid dust to treacherous mud.
Rovanperä, under the new scoring system, is poised to secure a substantial 18 points if he maintains his position through the climactic finale on Sunday. Reflecting on his performance, the seasoned Finn expressed cautious optimism, acknowledging the challenges that lie ahead while affirming his commitment to finishing strong.
“The lead is now quite good so of course we took it carefully,” remarked Rovanperä, whose triumph in 2022 marked a pivotal milestone in his illustrious career. “Tomorrow is still a tough day and we will try to finish the job.”
As anticipation mounts for the final leg on Sunday, competitors brace themselves for two loops of three stages, navigating the formidable terrain on both sides of Lake Naivasha.
